This Network was created to accelerate the restoration of rangelands and woodlands across the intermountain west through implementation of strategically-placed fuels management projects. This is accomplished by providing partners technological tools and innovative approaches to help them overcome barriers to restoration.

Background

The Network has been engaging people and developing technical tools to support the fire-related restoration of arid lands in the intermountain west since 2004.

In 2007 the Network is leading a community-based modeling project in Utah's Grouse Creek Mountains / Raft River Mountains. We will also convene a regional workshop to help participants overcome restoration barriers, and help with conservation planning efforts at several participating landscapes. The Intermountain West FLN is seeking to expand into new high-priority landscapes in eastern Nevada and across the Nevada-California border, and to also provide some new forms of support to meet the fire-related needs of under-staffed districts and field offices.

Demonstration Landscape

Utah's Grouse Creek Mountains / Raft River Mountains is the network's demonstration landscape.

Utah Partners for Conservation and Development (UPCD) granted $80,000 to the Conservancy’s Utah Chapter and the Intermountain West FLN to coordinate a stakeholder effort to spatially simulate the cumulative effects of alternative land management scenarios on the ecological condition of this 1.3-million-acre landscape. UCPD is considering adopting the methodology used in northwestern Utah as a model of restoration planning for other parts of Utah.
