Staff representing Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve have attended several Network workshops. The 1.3-million-acre (525,000-ha) Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve is located in the Mosquitia of eastern Honduras. It consists of extensive fire-maintained savannas and woodlands of Caribbean pine that have never been commercially logged.

In addition to its impressive biological diversity, the Honduran Mosquitia is known for its cultural diversity. Five ethnic groups live in the area: the Miskito, Tawahka and Pech indigenous groups, the Garífuna — descendents of a mixture of African and Carib peoples, and Ladino — descendents of a mixture of Spanish and indigenous groups.
